Did you know: 'Less than 1% of the world's deserts, if covered with concentrating solar power plants, could produce as much electricity as the world now uses.'

We need an earth-friendly, people-friendly plan for the future that observes and respects the capacity and potential of the natural world to meet the needs of current and future generations. If we leave things to go on as they are going now then surely in the near future of sacred earth will be a toxic and uninhabitable nuclear waste dump, the scorched remains of the ruined and barren earth, this is all that will remain of the precious earth if we let the current course of pillaging and plunder that passes for 'growth' economics to continue unchallenged.

Even a backward country - by industrial standards - like Namibia, has the potential to become a most prosperous country, a benefactor and friend to all the poor peoples of the world and this is why, because the one thing which we have a lot of, beside diamonds, gold, zinc, copper, etc, is sunshine. Scientists researching solar power have shown that 'Less than 1% of the world's deserts, if covered with concentrating solar power plants, could produce as much electricity as the world now uses.'

Our focus for a 21st century solution to our structural dependence on fossil fuel - and the powers of the corporations and countries that control these and hold the world to ransom over it - our focus should be on harnessing our own solar power that we have so much of on a mass an unprecedented scale. o as to reduce our energy import requirements, principally petrol, to a level where we are able within ten year to produce 80% of our energy needs from ultimately free and non-polluting solar, wind, wave sources, for science has shown this is entirely within reach. We can introduce large scale solar farming as a start.

The point is that desalination of the sea water should be the initial focus of the concentrated solar power technology, that we are able to desalinate sufficient water from the sea to supply household and industrial needs, to extend agriculture and replenish the natural sources to the level where within the next decade we are able to produce half of our water requirement.

Therefore solar power and desalination have to be inextricable linked for a number of reasons. When concentrated solar power technology is used desalination is a side product as the water which is sucked from the sea by use of a vacuum, is also used to cool the boiler systems and then condense again through several filtering phases to produce clean water as a by-product of the solar power harnessed from the turbines. This is most effectively stored for overnight use in melted salt.

Of all the natural requirements, Namibia has a plentiful supply of all these. With this perspective for creating our own energy and our own water, we can begin a programme of greening the land, including parts of the desert as we set about aiming to achieve food self sufficiency by employing an army of producers in food production, that we produce sufficient calories and protein for the population and for trade, as the principal an prior basis of our sustenance. This strategy of using solar energy, water purification and agricultural transformation through mass employment programmes, requires though that the land and technology be owned collectively and the control exercise communally, democratically, which means in short that it can only be achived through the self-governing commune, setting about transforming not only the conditions in which we live an work, but the aim toward which we direct our work. So we won't be working just to enrich ourselves at the expense of everyone and everything, but we will have to work together in solidarity to achieve our common goal of freeing ourselves.

At the heart of the transformation project is the question of social and political-economic relations. Who owns the sun-power, the conclusion which I am driving towards it that we cannot achieve an ecologically sound relationship to nature, while the people are alienated, estranged from the land and its fruits. It is only possible through communal relationships, through the commune of freely associated producers, in which all members have equal entitlement and part and place, that we can restore the relation between man and man, between man and woman and nature, as a natural relationship of mutual dependency, not based on exploitation and the calculation of the basest greed, but on understanding and respect.

In future people will think it was very strange that anyone could claim to possess a part of the earth, as we think it strange today that anyone could claim to possess another person. The only way towards this natural relationship to each other and the world is by restoring common ownership and rights and entitlement of all the people to the land and its product, but this collectivism, this incipient communalism which was the principal basis of the lives of the early people who shared the land and resources and held it in common, can now be established under the wholly new conditions, of modern technology, where information moves as fast as than lighting and highly developed earth sciences, make possible that human can trale in space and land objects on Mars. If we have such great capabilities, surely we have the capacity to meet our own humble needs here on Earth.
